Stone circles, stone rings and dwellings are to be seen in most places in the Hebrides. The Callinish stones on the Isle of Lewis are perhaps the most well known, as a child I was placed upon one of these infamous standing stones, and so the connection to lewisian gneiss was made. Though the true use of such places, remains hidden. They are believed to have been used for ritual and ceremonial activities for at least 2,000 years, with some theories suggesting an astronomical alignment tied to the 18.6-year lunar cycle.
